Chemistry Department Visit
Authors: Melissa Pfeifer and

Last Wednesday, the sixth grade
Science Club headed out to the FHSU Chemistry Department and had
an “explosive” time. We met up with Dr. Holman, head of the
chemistry department, and he taught us about the different
elements and the periodic table. “I learned a lot,” science club
member, Madison Ginther said. ”It was very interesting.” While
we were in the lab, Dr. Holman quickly got down to business and
showed us an experiment called elephant’s toothpaste. In no time
with just some boiled water, yeast, dish soap, and hydrogen
peroxide, Dr. Holman had a frothy, bubbly mixture oozing up out
of the old pop bottle. The science club members all agreed it
was the best part of the field trip. After that experiment, our
students all left the room eager for more as Dr. Holman gave us
a tour of the chemistry department. First we visited the
freshmen lab. The stuff might have been basic for them, but it
was mind boggling to us. Thankfully Dr. Holman explained to us
some of the essential parts of a chemistry lab. These included
fire extinguishers, fire blankets, and safety showers. He showed
us various machines all playing an important role in the lab.
Next, we visited the more advanced labs and essential parts to
the chemistry department. Sadly, after that, our time was up.
We thanked Dr. Holman for his time and left the building. (Don’t
worry we didn’t blow anything up!)
The Science Club looks forward to our
next field trip to the Physics Department on Wednesday, Oct. 7th.
