Title: Stan Slaughter’s Eco-Ways By
Jordyn Manhart and Annaka
Applequist
Stan
Slaughter visited Holy Family Elementary on Thursday, April
8 to talk about ways to help the environment. He visits 150
Schools every year which adds up to a 1000 schools so far.
He is also known as the “Recycling Teacher of
Kansas.”
Mr.
Slaughter shared a lot of his knowledge about being green.
He told us that wind turbines are 230 ft. tall and 137 ft.
wide, almost a football field! The tip of the wind turbine
spins 600 miles per hour and one turbine can power 40,000
houses. Now that is a lot of electricity! He also told us
that WalMart is planning in the future to have free
electricity for electric cars coming to the store. It takes
30 minutes to charge an electric car where the customer is
shopping.
We
interviewed Mr. Slaughter and he told us that the first
school he visited was Ulysses, KS. He is from
Lee’s Summit,
Mo. Before he was interested in
becoming green, he was a teacher.
He helps the
students understand the three R’s. He sang 4 songs on his
guitar which he has played for 50 years. He added a fourth
R, which is ”rethink.”
We thank Mr. Slaughter for taking the
time to come to our school. He helped us be greener, while
making it fun at the same time. For more information on Stan
Slaughter or how to be green, visit his website at
