Science Club GIS Day
By: Joseph Flax

GIS stands for Geographical Information System. GIS means maps, platforms, and areas that are mapped or need to be located. A professor talked about maps and how we use them today. He also talked about how the army uses GIS and technology. Then we were brought to a professor who’s main study was on Earth’s various numbers of rocks. There were rocks on shelves, on desks, and even on the floor! He showed and talked to us about rocks, and where they were found. He showed us Igneous, Metamorphic, and Sedimentary rocks. It was truly an interesting and fascinating subject. After that, we were brought downstairs to a very special van that was named Piggy. It was a very, very, very, very cool van. It had a satellite on the top which received internet connections from space. Inside, there was a large computer. It’s a special van because if people need help in a location, it can send them maps and location transmissions to help. It can also make an emergency broadcast just in case weather gets bad. At the end, we did a Google Earth treasure hunt. It was very fun.
