Title: A
Green
School!
Author: Shirley Dinkel
Holy
Family Elementary is a Green School in every way. We
encourage our families to support our projects and be as
“green” at home as they possibly can. Students can see the
carry-over from school to home and develop strong recycling
attitudes and efforts. Listed below are ways to keep our
world a cleaner, greener, place to live:
HFE
receives cash back for:
-
Aluminum cans
-
Ink
cartridges
-
Cell
phones
-
Capri
Sun pouches (Kindergarten project)
HFE
receives credit to buy school and playground supplies from:
-
Box tops and Campbell’s labels
-
McDonald’s sales slips
HFE also collects these:
-
Batteries and spray cans to keep
them from polluting the land fill
-
Pull tabs on cans (given to the
support the Ronald McDonald House – send to 4A)
-
Used, unwanted school materials
(e.g. crayons, markers) for use in the Art Dept.
In
addition, each classroom, the office, faculty room, and
cafeteria have bins for:
-
Recycling paper and cardboard
-
Co-mingle (e.g. plastic, cans)
We
have saved a considerable amount of money by eliminating
paper going home and using mass emails instead. This has
saved on the office’s time, as well as wear-and-tear on the
copier.
Classrooms make efforts to turn off lights when leaving the
room, keeping the doors shut to maintain cooling and heating
temperatures, shades are adjusted to control sunlight on hot
days, and water bottles are encouraged to be brought to
school.
We
believe in educating our children on the well being of the
planet so they may enjoy the fruits of a clean environment
for future generations. It is the responsible actions of a
good steward of God’s good earth. It is entrusted to us for
a short time, but has long-reaching effects. Please join us
in our efforts, and we challenge you to make your home a
green home.
