Holy Family Elementary School

Red Wheel Fundraiser
By Taylor Teel and Ciara Seib

Mark Shavi came to our school once again for our exciting annual Red Wheel Kickoff! Holy Family is their best massive fundraiser. This year there are new prizes and delicious food for you and your family to fight over. For every 10 items that you sell, your name is put into a drawing for phenomenal games. Sell as many items as you can to work to the top. 3rd place is a superb Nintendo DS, 2nd is an attractive iPod Nano, and 1st place is a brand new Wii System! Our goal is to sell 4,500 items to get Mrs. Simon her “special” hat. So let’s get rollin’ on the Red Wheel and have a fantastic turnout!!!!

Back To School
By Alec Stults and Trae Megaffin

School is back in session; back to learning about all kinds of quirky, fun, and interesting stuff - as well as all the necessary stuff. It’s back to spending tons of time with your teacher; back to doing homework and going to bed early. The good thing is that we are back to seeing friends every day, too, and back to going to Mass twice a week and learning more ways to follow Jesus Christ.

The new music/band teacher, Mr. Saur, is here and ready to kick off the year with some rocking and rolling music fun. Lane Werth said, "He is nice and makes learning fun." The kids think that his games are cool, which shows there are really awesome ways to learn different types of music. Mr. Saur isn't the only new staff member this year. Mrs. North, sixth grade, teaches Science, English, and creative writing. We are excited to have her as a new addition to the sixth grade teaching staff.

It may be hard to leave summer behind, but there are many good reasons to look forward to the school year.

A Local Hero Is Laid To Rest
By Holly Linenberger

Chief Warrant Officer 2, Bryan Joseph Nichols, 31, died August 6th 2011. There were 30 American troops that died that day in Afghanistan when their Chinook helicopter was shot down due to hostile enemy action.

Bryan was born October 16, 1979 in Hays, the son of Douglas and Cynthia Nichols. Bryan attended St. Joseph School and was a 1998 TMP-Marian High alum. He served with the 158 Aviator Regiment Army Reserve in Olathe, KS. He leaves behind his wife, Mary, a son, Brayden, his parents, 3 siblings, and many friends.

Bryan is a true hero. On Wednesday, Aug. 17, Holy Family teachers, students, and families took part in honoring him with a silent tribute by proudly lining Vine Street by our playground with flags in our hands. Our whole community participated. We quietly stood as the funeral procession went by with his body. The line was from the airport, down Highway 40, up Vine to Hays Memorial Chapel.

Most of us did not know Bryan, but we will never forget him. He bravely gave his life for others. “There is no greater love than you lay down your life for your friend.”

 Bryan: our local hero.

Meet the New Teachers!
By Brianna Romme and Savannah Yost

Here at Holy Family we have two new teachers, Mr. Sauer and Mrs. North. Mr. Sauer will be teaching music and band along with Mrs. Amrein.

Mr. Sauer has that special ear for music. He was inspired to teach at HFE because of Miss Huser. They were really good friends. What really made Mr. Sauer come and teach at HFE was HFE itself. He knew how great the school was and that it also had good values and a good environment. His wife, Mrs. Sauer, is a para for Preschool. His goal this year for the students of Holy Family is to teach them a life lesson to always do and try their best. He thinks that the students at Holy Family are very friendly and welcoming.

Mrs. North is teaching sixth grade this year. She is very fun and creative. She will be teaching Shurley English, Science, and Creative Writing. If she was to teach any other subject, she would like to teach art and reading since she loves arts and crafts and likes to read. Mrs. North was inspired to teach at HFE because of her seventh and eighth grade religion teachers. What Mrs. North is looking forward to most is getting to know all the students and doing some awesome hands-on projects!

IF you see one of these teachers in the hall, please say “Hi” and wish them a great year in our wonderful building!
