Hays Catholic Schools mourns the passing of a beloved teacher, mentor, and friend, Mrs. Juleen Stecklein.
For more than three decades at TMP-Marian—and over 40 years in Ellis County—Mrs. Stecklein dedicated her life to the formation of young minds and hearts. A master teacher of English and German, she helped to shape generations of Monarchs through Senior English and Advanced Placement coursework, always holding her students to the highest standards with both rigor and care. Juleen was awarded TMP-Marian's "Point of Light" in 2015. This is the school's highest recognition.
Beyond her years in the classroom, Mrs. Stecklein remained a faithful servant to our community—volunteering in the Alumni Office, supporting parish life through St. Nicholas Ladies Guild, and continuing her quiet, steadfast witness of Christian service.
Her legacy lives on not only in her family—three sons, all TMP-Marian graduates—but in the countless alumni whose lives she shaped through her intellect, discipline, and unwavering belief in their potential.
We ask our TMP-Marian family to join us in praying for the repose of her soul, and for comfort and peace for the Stecklein family. “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Here are Thomas More Prep-Marian's top 7 strengths from the recent school family survey results.

1. Massive Encouragement of Faith: A high volume of respondents "Strongly Agree" that students are encouraged to develop a closer relationship with Jesus Christ through all aspects of their experience.

2. Strong Prayer Culture: The community overwhelmingly identifies as one that prays together, with very frequent "Strongly Agree" ratings.

3. Mission Clarity: Parents and community members strongly believe the school effectively makes Jesus and the teachings of the Church known to all students.

4. Holistic Education: There is significant positive feedback regarding the school’s ability to offer arts, athletics, and extracurriculars that support the education of the "whole child".

5. Service Oriented: Many respondents agree that the school lives the Gospel message through service to the poor and those in need.

6. Reputation for Excellence: Numerous parents "Strongly Agree" that the school upholds high standards of excellence in all its offerings.

7. Inclusive Environment: Despite the religious focus, the survey includes and values feedback from non-Catholic families and community members .

Thank you parents for completing the Catholic identity survey before spring break. School families will be emailed a more comprehensive summary.

The TMP-hosted home invitational, delayed a month by weather, took place Saturday, February 28, at the St. Joseph's Parish Hall (formerly Kennedy School), and TMP were the runaway winners in both High School and Junior High divisions.

In the High School division, TMP took off running the boards, and led all day, finally finishing with 17 1/2 of a possible 20 team points, 9 points ahead of both Ellinwood and Hays High, and 9 1/2 ahead of Ellis High. Individually, it was the same story, TMP players claiming the top six individual places in the event. Senior Blaise Staab finished 1st with 5 wins and no losses, Senior Eli Stein finished 2nd with 4 wins and one draw, Sophomores Ethan Gibson, Cade Schlautman, and Zack Billinger finished 3rd - 5th respectively with 4 wins and 1 loss, and 9th Grader Caden Pinkney finished 6th with 2 wins and 3 draws. Sophomore Dylan Billinger finished 9th with a plus score of 3 wins and 2 losses. The entire team earned medals for their efforts.

The results were similar in the Junior High Division, with TMP running the boards until the 3rd Round, finally finishing with 18 1/2 out of a possible 20 team points, ahead of Concordia by 8 1/2 points, and Ellis by 11 points. Individually, the Junior High team, all 8th Graders, claimed the top four places: Braden and Alex Unrein shared 1st-2nd with 5 wins and no losses, Joshua Marintzer was 3rd with 4 wins and 1 draw, and Garret Billinger was 4th with 4 wins and one loss. Shea Goddard-Mcguirk finished 16th with 1 win, 1 draw, and 3 losses.

This caps off a successful February for TMP Chess. On February 7, at Concordia Academy in Wichita, TMP's high school team edged out Valley Center 15 - 14 1/2, while the junior high team finished 2nd with 16 1/2, behind the Classical School of Wichita at 18 points. On February 14, a combined team of high school and junior high players finished 1st in the high school division at Concordia, with 14 1/2 points to Riley County's 13, and Hays High's 11 1/2. Two tournaments now remain: on March 7, TMP will travel to St. Francis of Assisi in Wichita, and on March 14, State in Emporia.
