The 5th Grade students have been hard at work on a STREAM project, titled, Mr. Popper's Penguins. This project spanned 4 classrooms...Mrs. Dinkel's English class, Library, Art and Computer. The students started and completed this project in just over two weeks! Take a peek at their finished penguins and what the teachers have to say about the project! From Mrs. Dinkel, classroom portion: “Fifth graders read the novel Mr. Popper's Penguins. The book was written in 1938, so the children were not sure about reading an 84-year-old story! The book was started by Richard Atwater. He became ill, so his wife, Florence, finished the book and sent it to a publisher. After finishing the novel, the class watched the movie, "Mr. Popper's Penguins", filmed in 2011. We then completed a compare/contrast worksheet: book vs movie. While everyone loved the movie, the majority of the students liked the book better. From Mrs. Brown, Library portion: “The fifth graders were assigned a WebQuest where they visited worldlife.org and had to choose a type of penguin. They had to answer questions such as: What is the environment the penguin lives in? What does it eat? What is the level of endangerment that it faces? And what are the conservation efforts that are being done? They also created a commemorative penguin postage stamp.” Mrs. Steigerwald, Art portion: “In Art class, students were paired with a partner and used their chrome books to research Antarctic penguins. They wrote down some facts and physical attributes of the penguin they chose (color/features/height/etc.) and sketched it on white paper. Then they used butcher paper to measure the correct height of their penguin and created a life size drawing of their chosen penguin. They used multiple materials such as paint, markers, colored pencils and crayons to color their penguin and added other features like torn paper for the feathers. They were extremely creative and used elements of art in multiple ways such as the use of texture, form, and color. They also used technology to help write some interesting facts and guide them in their drawings. They really enjoyed this project and how it connected to their learning in the classroom!” Mrs. Flax, Computer portion: “During their computer time, the 5th grade students visited a number of zoology websites to learn more about the penguins. They also had an opportunity to further explore their habitats via several zoo and aquarium webcams.”
